Friends’ Corner was opened with a very simple ceremony in April 2008. Now, years later, looking back, it is amazing to see how far we have progressed in converting an unused transformer room into a pleasant and welcoming facility. Conveniently located opposite the Blood Bank, Friends’ Corner is valued by staff, patients and visitors, who often comment on the friendly manner in which they are served, and who describe our shop as God sent.
We began in a very small and humble way, and have progressed to meet the needs of our customers. Friends’ Corner has now evolved into a well appreciated haven for those requiring a much needed respite from the hectic life which consumes all who have to be at the hospital.
We stock a small selection of toiletries and stationery, but it is the array of refreshments such as sandwiches, snacks, and other delights that are in great demand. For the health conscious, we also stock a small selection of fresh fruits, healthy snacks and drinks.
Many hours are spent in the hospital compound by persons donating blood, and patients requiring dialysis. They, and their families and friends, find not only refreshments in Friends’ corner, but a listening and empathetic ear, and that is where, for some, their greatest need is met. Friends’ Corner has turned out to be the ‘go to’ place for many people in the hospital, because of the helpful and friendly service they receive from our sole employee, and the volunteers who ably assist her.
The group is currently home to many student volunteers and hence those who visit the shop will now see an array of young enthusiastic faces, who, in a very small way, are trying to give back to their community. We welcome young people to our organization, and hope that they would use this opportunity and experience as a ‘stepping stone’ to greater things.
We now have a covered walkway leading up to the front entrance of Friends' Corner, and the patio area is complete with tables and benches, making it the perfect place to relax and revitalise with the refreshment of your choice.
